Fly Fishing in the himalayas for golden mahseer
The Region
A fly fishing trip to India for the Golden Mahseer is an adventure. You travel by air, train, 4x4 and a raft to reach the camp nestled alongside the jade coloured water of the Saryu River located deep in the Himalayas on the Nepalese border.
It’s a totally authentic experience where you will experience rural Indian life as well as attentive expert guiding on the river and generous hospitality in the camp with delicious cuisine throughout the day prepared by the chef.
The Mahseer is India’s iconic sporting fish renowned for its power and living in fast flowing rivers. Head ghillie, Bobby holds the world record for catching a 57lb mahseer. You can expect to catch one to two each day and a 15lb mahseer is considered a trophy fish.
Each day your ghillie will accompany you to your spot on the river and it may take up to an hour to trek there. Its a wildlife and nature experience along the walk for all variety of indigenous birds and possibly a leopard if you’re lucky. You’ll witness centuries old methods of farming with water buffalo ploughing hillside terraces and local children playing on the riverbank.
Hosts and Guides
The entire host team, led by owner of the camp Mickey Sidhu, is completely charming and nothing is too much trouble to ensure your trip is rewarding and enjoyable.
A member of the team will meet you and travel with you from Delhi to the camp and similarly on your return.
The team of ghillies under the guidance of head ghillie, Bobby will accompany you each day starting in the morning after breakfast and again during late afternoon and into the evening.
It’s best to bring your own rod and lures and we will advise on the equipment required.
The chef produces the most exceptional food and you will delight in what he produces from the chef’s tent. Each meal is taken in the colonial style tent on the bank of the river, and at night under the purest open skies littered with stars.
Four simple tents nestle along the river bank with paths around the camp lit with lanterns to navigate the way. Its rustic comfort with crisp linen bedding and an open air shower with a team to offer you the greatest hospitality.
